Kilpatrick Fundraising Site Called a Hoax

Posted on: Monday, 8 September 2008, 09:00 CDT

Attorneys for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick say a Web site soliciting funds for his $1 million legal restitution bill is a fake.

The Web site popped up soon after Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice charges stemming from his false testimony in last year's police whistle-blower scandal, the Detroit Free Press reported. As part of a sentencing deal, Kilpatrick was ordered to pay $1 million in legal restitution.

The site urges readers to make donations to "support Kwame Kilpatrick 2014 for mayor of Detroit -- together we can bring him back," and features a photo of the mayor being snuggled by his wife.

"It is not an authorized site by the mayor or anyone he's affiliated with," mayoral spokesman James Canning told the newspaper. "We would advise any supporters of Mayor Kilpatrick not to donate to this fake Web site."

The Web site misspells the names of Wayne County Attorney Kym Worthy and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, and ignores the fact that there is no Detroit mayoral election in 2014, the Free Press said.
