Ovechkin leads season's first NHL awards

Posted on: Monday, 5 October 2009, 13:42 CDT

Washington's Alex Ovechkin, who had six points in his first two games this season, is the NHL's first star in the league's player of the week voting.

The NHL selects three stars of the week each Monday. Ovechkin took the first star award with Colorado goaltender Craig Anderson and St. Louis center Keith Tkachuk also honored.

Ovechkin had had two goals and an assist in the Capitals' season opener against Boston and came back with a goal and two assists in Washington's first home game of the season. He is coming off season in which he was voted the NHL's most valuable player.

Anderson, an offseason acquisition by Colorado, stopped 73 of 74 shots while helping the Avalanche to a 2-0-0 start. He had 38 saves against San Jose in his first game of the season and then posted his eighth career shutout with 35 saves in beating Vancouver.

Tkachuk had two goals and two assists as the Blues swept the Detroit Red Wings in a pair of games in Sweden. He has 527 career goals, which places him second all-time among U.S.-born players.
