Nepal Supreme Court Warns Foreign Ministry Over UN Deal

Posted on: Monday, 12 September 2005, 12:00 CDT

Text of report by Nepalese radio Kantipur FM on 12 September

The Supreme Court has for the seventh time summoned the Foreign Ministry to make available the agreement between the government and the United Nations to send Nepalese army personnel on peacekeeping duties at the call of the United Nations.

The Supreme Court has warned the ministry to present the agreement by 25 October, the scheduled date for the hearing on the case at the apex court. The apex court has said that if the ministry does not produce the agreement it will be charged with contempt of court.

Earlier, on 31 August this year, the Supreme Court asked the foreign ministry to make the Nepalese government-United Nations agreement available but so far the ministry has only sent a letter to the court saying it was in the process of sending the agreement.

A former soldier Amar Thapa Magar had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court four years ago demanding transparency on the agreement and the salaries of soldiers going on UN peacekeeping duties.
