Foreign Ministry Spokesman Says Iran, EU Should Think About Future

Posted on: Sunday, 14 August 2005, 15:00 CDT

Text of report by Iranian TV on 14 August

[Announcer] The Foreign Ministry spokesman has said that the activities of the Esfahan uranium processing installation will not stop. [Hamid Reza] Asefi said that the Board of Governors [of the International Atomic Energy Agency] had approved a non-legal resolution against Iran, thereby perpetrating a political act against Iran. He added: Iran and Europe must think about the future to find out how they can resolve their problems through dialogue.

[Asefi - recording] We are waiting to see what will happen over the next few days. We believe that it is unnecessary to hold a meeting on 3 September. We do not see any reason for doing so. You see, our activities are peaceful and the [International Atomic Energy] Agency has made an announcement on this as well. So even the Board of Governors is not in a position to impose compulsory and obligatory measures and activities.

From our point of view, the two agreements, namely, the Tehran declaration and the Paris agreement are still credible as far as we are concerned and the Europeans are the ones who have violated it. Iran has still not reached a consensus on what it should do about Natanz. I think that Europe's behaviour and actions over the next few days will have a decisive impact on our decisions regarding the issue of Natanz and other activities.

We are interested in dialogue without any pre-conditions. The issue of stopping the activities at Esfahan is not on the Islamic Republic of Iran's agenda. Therefore, we do not expect the Iranians to set any pre-conditions. I think that we and Europe should look to the future. Let bygones be bygones. I mean, they have made a mistake. They acted contrary to the spirit of the Tehran declaration and the Paris agreement. We have started our activities at Esfahan. That belongs to the past and one cannot return to the past any more. We should think about the future and see how we and Europe can talk about and negotiate the remaining issues and how we can take things forward.
