The Syrian Foreign Ministry has told the heads of diplomatic missions in Damascus that the Syrian border guard forces have been subject to attacks not only by insurgents and saboteurs, but also from Iraqi and American forces. The Syrian Foreign Ministry said that the number of border clashes amounted to 100 armed clashes, some of which were due to US soldiers who had fired wildly on those who were present near the sand barrier [on the Syrian side of the border].
In Washington, American officials in the Pentagon said that they had no information about gunfire incidents in which Syrians were involved, but they would look into the matter with the American forces in Iraq.
