The 18th Annual Symposium on Healthcare Design Addresses Timely Topics from Emergency Room Design to Healing Garden Design and Provides Tours of Atlanta's Most Innovative Medical Facilities

The 18th Annual Symposium on Healthcare Design, created for the healthcare design industry, by the healthcare design industry, announced today the completion of its 2005 speaking topic agenda. The Symposium, to be held on September 26-28, 2005, at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, stands as the longest running conference and exhibition dedicated to the improvement of the overall health and welfare of patients and successful business outcomes through the design element.

"This year's Symposium on Healthcare Design features a speaker roster of seasoned, industry leaders designed to provide a wide array of expertise and actionable advice to conference attendees," said George Pressler, Symposium advisory board member / founder and president of Planning Decision Resources, Inc. "New ideas and improvements to traditional approaches will be reflected in the in-depth sessions developed by our industry Advisory Board. The goal is to stimulate audience discussion and thought in order to advance the interests of our industry."

With more than 80 experts from a variety of industries including interior design, architecture and facility management speaking, the Symposium stands out as the most comprehensive source of information regarding all aspects of healthcare design. Sample topics to be addressed include:

1 "Emergency Departments: Designing to Heal," James Lennon AIA, ACHA, president of Lennon Associates, will discuss the emergency departments migration from the "back of the house" to the front and center of the hospital. New research and design techniques allow architects, designers, facility managers and medical staff to increase patient safety and satisfaction. A full review of floor plans and current / future technologies for planning will be reviewed and assessed in this day-long, interactive session. "Sacred Geometry & Integrative Medicine," Molly Scanlon AIA, ACHA, President/CEO, Schmidt Scanlon Gordon, will cover connecting the mind, body and spirit to space, time and place using sacred geometry. The practices within integrative medicine will be reviewed and how the architecture and design of the recently completed facility, The Dickinson & Gooding Center for Early Detection at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, contribute to the health and well being of the patients.

2 "Toward a Taxonomy of Healing Garden Design," Koichi John Kurisu, COO, Kurisu International, Inc., will discuss how gardens are good for health and healthcare is now accepted by most industry professionals. The session will assist administrators in evaluating proposals, aid clinicians in creating integrated programming and inspire scientists to advance our understanding of the symbiotic relationship between nature and human well being.

In addition to the Symposium's sessions, Atlanta's most innovative healthcare facilities will welcome attendees to tour their locations and discuss the design. The tours will include the Emory Pediatrics Research and Clinical Building, and Northside Community Hospital.

1 Emory Pediatrics Research and Clinical Building is designed to reshape the experience of care for pediatrics patients and their families by providing a family-oriented, friendly, modern and efficient facility, resembling private doctors' offices rather than a large public clinic. The building features more than 31 exam rooms, configured in pods of four, creating an intimate setting despite the building size. Other features include: three separate, open waiting areas, each with soft seating in relaxing colors; expansive windows that frame outside vistas bathing the room in natural light and dramatic tanks of tropical fish and wetland amphibians.

2 The Northside Community Hospital is constructing a 23,000 square foot emergency department that will be ready to treat patients as early as December of this year. The new department will feature 30 treatment rooms including trauma care, urgent care and clinical care, as well as enhanced cardiac capabilities. The construction also will feature a 17,000 square foot observation unit and a 12,500 square foot radiological diagnostic center that will serve the emergency department, surgery, inpatient and outpatient needs.
