Transport Ministry Opens London-Moscow Route to Bma

Posted on: Friday, 31 March 2006, 21:00 CST

MOSCOW. March 31 (Interfax) - The Russian and British aviation authorities have agreed to permit British Midland Airways (BMA) to enter the Russian market, the Russian Transport Ministry told Interfax on Friday.

"The increasing flow of passenger traffic between the two countries has prompted new understandings. The talks resulted in agreements meeting the interests of both the company and passengers," a ministry release quotes head of the Russian Aviation Agency Alexander Yurchik as saying.

BMA will be permitted to operate ten flights a week on the Moscow- London route, with the possibility of increasing the number to 14 by winter.

Other airlines operating on the market were also assigned additional flights: as of autumn Aeroflot and British Airways will be allotted three flights a day, Transaero and BMA two.

The sides also agreed to establish new routes between the two countries: from Moscow to Birmingham and Liverpool and from Kaliningrad and Krasnoyarsk to London. Which airlines will operate these routes is currently being negotiated, the ministry said.

By the end of the year the two countries' aviation authorities plan to sign a new agreement to replace the present one, which has been in effect since 1957.
