APC Introduces a Green Uninterruptible Power Supply Providing Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings
Posted on: Monday, 3 December 2007, 09:00 CST
APC, part of the Critical Power and Cooling Services business unit of Schneider Electric, today announced the APC Back-UPS(R) ES 750, a highly efficient uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that provides battery backup and surge protection to connected equipment while saving electricity. The APC Back-UPS ES 750 features new master/controlled outlets, which work to reduce energy consumption by automatically shutting down power to unused peripherals, such as printers, scanners and speakers when the computer is in sleep mode.
"The new APC Back-UPS ES 750 is designed to provide our customers with an environmentally friendly solution to protect their home computer system," said Joe Loberti, senior vice president, Home and Distributed Systems, APC-MGE. "The electronics in this unit are meticulously engineered to minimize impact on the environment and maximize efficiency, consuming up to five times less power in normal operation than other available solutions -- saving consumers money on their electric bill."
The new master/controlled outlets on the APC Back-UPS ES 750 provide energy savings by shutting down unused peripherals. The master outlet is designed to sense current drawn by connected equipment, typically a computer. When the computer is powered down or goes into sleep mode, the master outlet will automatically shut-down the controlled outlets, which consume power even when the computer is off. By cutting power to these "dark loads," the APC Back-UPS ES 750 can provide a combined savings of $40 per year on average as compared with competitors' models.
The APC Back-UPS ES 750 boasts a new industrial design that minimizes its physical size and improves its aesthetic appeal. This new design uses less copper and other raw materials during the manufacturing process and its packaging is made from recycled material. Additionally, the unit is compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), meaning it conforms to the strictest environmental regulations making it more environmentally friendly at the end of its life. RoHS prohibits the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacturing of electronics, including lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE.
The APC Back-UPS ES 750 offers ten outlets, all of which provide surge protection with five of the ten also providing battery backup. With 450 Watts, the APC Back-UPS ES 750 has plenty of power to back up home computer systems and provides up to 70 minutes of run time, depending on the load. Additionally, the unit offers coax and telephone or Ethernet protection ensuring surges and spikes do not travel through data lines. A data port enables communication with APC's PowerChute(R) Personal Edition software, which gracefully powers down the computer system automatically in the event of an extended power outage.
The APC Back-UPS ES 750 (BE750G), which carries an estimated retail price of $99.99, is currently available in select retail locations and will be introduced in North America in January 2008.
