ESA/EnvisatDownload full size image
The Strait of Gibraltar is the main feature on this Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image. Considered as the western entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, the narrow Strait separates Europe from North Africa. To the north is the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) and on the opposite side of the strait is Morocco where the cities of Tangier, Ttouan (Moroccan peninsula), Rabat and Casablanca (along the Atlantic coast) are clearly visible. To the right of the strait large wave patterns and sea currents can be observed.
