GALEX First Light - galaxies
NASA · Download full size image
This is a blowup of a region in the first image obtained by GALEX after launch. It is constructed from images obtained with the Far ultraviolet (FUV) detector (colored blue) and Near ultraviolet (NUV) detector (colored red).
Although the exposure time is less then 3% of that used in GALEX Deep Imaging Survey (DIS) observations, more than 50 sources are detected in this small section of the First Light image. DIS observations are expected to reveal about 10,000 faint ultraviolet sources, the majority of which will be distant star forming galaxies.
A number of interacting galaxy pairs and triplets may be present in this image. These could also be individual star formation regions in single galaxies. Posted on: 19 Apr, 2005
