Rabat, the capital of Morocco, is located on the Atlantic coast and is considered an important industry pole.
Historically Rabat has been a Mauri (local tribe) settlement then a Roman Empire outpost grown up on the south bank of river Bou Regreg. After the collapse of Rome the outpost was conquered by Arab tribes, who built a fortress (Ribat) upon a hill in the north bank of the river.
It became capital of Morocco in 1956.
