Greenland

This MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image is over Greenland. The largest island in the world is an internally self-governing part of Denmark. The majority of Greenland is above the arctic circle and apart from patches around the coast and in the south it is formed of ice cap. The ice can be clearly distinguished from the clouds, which appear in the bottom part of the image. The capital and largest city is Nuuk, which is situated on the south western coast. Most of the population of 56,500 people lives along this southwestern strip, with 12,500 people residing in Nuuk.
