Batagur
The Batagur, Batagur baska, also known as the mangrove terrapin, is a species of rare and endangered turtle. It is found in parts of India such as Bengal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia (Kedah, Perak and Terengganu), Sumatra, Indonesia and Cambodia (Cardamom Mountains), and populations have been sharply declining in recent years.
The shell of the Batagur measures about 23.6 inches long. The upper surface of the shell and soft parts are olive-brown while the lower surface is yellowish. The limbs are transversely large with band-like scales. In Cambodia, the Batagur is also known as the “Royal Turtle” as its eggs were a royal delicacy.
