Arakan Forest Turtle
The Arakan Forest Turtle, Heosemys depressa, is an extremely rare species that is found only in the Arakan hills of western Myanmar (Burma). It was thought to be extinct since it was last seen in 1908. In 1994 it was rediscovered when a few specimens turned up in the Asian food markets.
Like most Asian turtles, the Arakan turtle is collected yearly for food or medical cures. There are only a handful of theses turtles in captivity, and their status in the wild is listed as critical. There are an estimated 17 Arakan Forest Turtles left in the wild. Being one of the most endangered species of turtle in the world, very little is known about this turtle.
