Commonly known as Cane Bluestem, Bothriochloa barbinodis is a grass species native to the Americas. It is indigenous to the southern United States as well as South and Central America and Mexico. Booming perennially, the species grows in tufts from 2 to 4 feet in height. The stems are similar in color to wheat and have intermittent nodules adorned with wispy hairs. The leaves are 8 to 11 inches in length and range in color from a bluish green to a rusty yellow depending on the dryness of the plant. This grass serves important functions because it can withstand drought conditions both as food for grazing animals and as groundcover for lands that have been recently cleared. It is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant because of its attractive inflorescences which feature several spikelet units each with one hairy straw colored fertile spikelet with a spiraled awn just under 1.5 inches in length and one smaller stalky non-fertile spikelet with out an awn.
