Buxus sempervirens or Boxwood is indigenous to western and southern Europe, northwest Africa and southwest Asia. This small slender evergreen tree grows from 3 - 30 feet in height with a narrow trunk reaching less than 8 inches in diameter. Yellowish green oval shaped leaves grow from just over half an inch to just under one and a quarter inches in length and less than half an inch wide. Unremarkable petaless flowers of the same yellowish green color are pollinated by insects and produce tri-lobal fruits containing 3-6 seeds. This species grows best is soils rich in chalk and limestone.

This shrub it useful in making topiaries and its dense wood is used in engraving, woodturning, tool handles and in mallet heads.
