African Alpine Bamboo
Yushania alpina is perennial bamboo that comes from the Poaceae family and is often referred to as African Alpine bamboo. This plant comes from the subfamilies of Yushania and Sinarundinaria but not Chimonocalamus.
The stems and leaves of the African Alpine bamboo can grow to be 6-64 feet tall and 2-5 inches in diameter. The stems and leaves are used for building materials such as fencing or plumbing. Tubular coverings or culm sheaths are red bristles or hairless however, leaf sheath is overspread with bristles. The leaves are 2-8 inches long and the leaf blades shed at the ligule, or the base of the leaf. The flowers which grow in branched groups on the plant are usually loose or dense but grow to be 2-6 inches long. The roots of the African Alpine bamboo are described as short rhizomes.
