Basset Fauve de Bretagne

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a short-legged scent hound. It stands barely over a foot high and is the shortest backed of all the basset breeds. It has short, fine, dark hair on its ears and coarse, dense, lighter hair on its coat. The ears just reach the end of the nose instead of trailing on the ground like other Bassets.

The breed was developed in France, and was once a rare breed, but now stands its ground as a show dog, family pet and scent hound. It is a loving, outgoing breed that is good with children but may not be suitable for every family because of its love for hunting. The median lifespan of the breed is 10.4 years, and it exhibits very few health problems; however, some dogs may have health issues such as epilepsy, reproductive problems, otitis media, otitis externa, corneal ulcers or cataracts.
