Bandog

The Bandog (also called Bandogge) originated around 1300 in England and was a guard dog. It was a mastiff-type dog bred to be chained during the day and released at night to ward off intruders.

In those times the Bandog was strictly a working dog without a set type. One of the Bandog programs in England led to the establishment of another breed, the Bullmastiff. The Bandog was a huge dog, ugly, stubborn and fierce. It was bred almost strictly to function as a guard dog so the standard was not very strict. One particular breeder, Joe Lucero, bred Bandogs that were celebrated as perfection for their stable temperament and work ethic. The breed should at least have a broad skull, wide shoulders, a powerful chest, and be very controlled.

There are several different Bandog breeding programs. The primary group bred the Bandog from the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier; another group from the Mastiff and the Neapolitan Mastiff. A third group bred from the American Bulldog, Boerboel, Bullmastiff, Bulldog Campeiro, Bull Terrier, Cane Corso, Dogue de Bordeaux, Fila Brasileiro, Great Dane, Perro de Presa Canario, and/or the Tosa Inu. Regardless of the breeding program it is essential to select dogs suitable for guard work, and the selection of appropriate breed representatives using health and temperament testing is necessary. The goal in breeding is to combine the courage of an American Pit Bull Terrier with the guarding instinct and size of a Mastiff type dog.
