Black Lace-Weaver
The Black Lace-Weaver (Amaurobius ferox) is a species of spider that is found through much of Europe and North America. It has been introduced into New Zealand. This species is capable of biting humans and is known to do so.
The female is about 0.63 inches in length (excluding legs). It is dark brown to black. The abdomen is rounded and has unclear yellow markings. The male is similar in appearance to the female but is somewhat smaller (0.43 inches) and more slender.
The female lays the eggs in a white sac in a sheltered area. The mother guards the sac until the eggs hatch. Once the eggs hatch, she will lay a second set of eggs on which the newly-hatched spiders feed. Within a few days the mother will then actively encourage the offspring to devour her.
